ke·to·gen·ic
ˌkēdəˈjenik/
adjective
- relating to or causing ketogenesis.
ke·to·gen·e·sis
ˌkēdəˈjenəsəs/
noun
PHYSIOLOGY
noun: ketogenesis
- the production of ketone bodies during the metabolism of fats.
LCHF
low-carb, high fat diet or low-carb, healthy fat diet
noun
a way of eating that means lower carbohydrates and higher fats proportionally – includes moderate protein intake.
(I prefer to call it low-carb, healthy fats – because they are healthy fats and people freak out when I say high fat!)
To summarize – eating a very low-carb, ketogenic or “keto” diet turns you into a fat-burning machine!
One of the most important tips that I always share with my FBFs (Fat-Burning Friends) is that you MUST take the time to LEARN the science. UNDERSTAND the science. Then you can APPLY the science!
We all want to be fat-burning machines, AM I RIGHT? Here’s my very favorite tools! I’m going to let the sciency-type science geeks teach you the science.
Diet Doctor and Jason Fung, MD
The first website I stumbled upon when I googled Dr. Jason Fung was Diet Doctor. The first videos series I landed on was his series on Intermittent Fasting. It was here that I learned how following a low-carb or Keto diet combined with time-restricted eating would heal my metabolic syndrome.
Diet Doctor’s website has a lot of free content and the first 30 days are free. You will probably have to subscribe to their site for these links to go right to where I am pointing. I strongly recommend becoming a subscriber to this site. The content is up to date, the website layout is easy to navigate, and besides – this site literally changed my life and I am happy to send the $9 a month to support their work. The first thing I did was sign up for the 2 week challenge and the rest was history. The site also has recipes, educational videos and interviews with top experts in the field, meal plans, Keto friendly food suggestions, and of course – success stories!
The site is the brain child of Andreas Eenfeldt, MD. Here is a recent talk he gave on “A Global Food Revolution“. It is very clear from watching all his videos that his life’s passion is to help people heal and live healthy lives.
Dr. Fung also has his own website for his Intensive Dietary Management program. He blogs regularly here. It’s very sciency and I LOVE it and highly recommend this for learning.
Dr. Fung also has three books published – which everyone must get, read, and have in their library. The first one read was “The Obesity Code“. The tagline on this book is “Unlocking the Secrets to Weight Loss”! Hello! Read this and you will learn the secrets.
If you’re interested in learning how to make Intermittent Fasting part of your life, you will want to purchase “The Complete Guide to Fasting“. This book was co-authored by Jimmy Moore.
Dr. Fung’s most recent book “The Diabetes Code” is another must have for your library. I purchased an extra copy of this book to share with my FBFs.
You can also find Dr. Fung on his YouTube channel where he has posted his lectures.
Gary Taubes – Author of “Why We Get Fat and What to Do About It”
This was the second book I read to learn the science and it was hugely impactful and confirmed my idea that “Sugar Is The Devil”. It is available on Amazon. Gary is very active in the Keto & LCHF world – trying to spread the word through his writing expertise.
Dr. Ken Berry – Author of “Lies My Doctor Told Me”
I’m not exactly sure when I discovered Dr. Berry – it wasn’t until I was at or very near my goal weight. I am so sad that it took be so long to discover him! He is a family practice MD, practicing in Tennessee. He is very funny, down to earth, and gets straight to the point. He often says about SAD (standard American diet) advice “that’s just dumb”! He is so right. I am a supporter of his work through Patreon. You can find his Patreon account here: Ken D. Berry, MD.
Dr. Berry is also now doing e-visits and actively posts on YouTube. His book is available on Amazon! Check him OUT! I’m happy to say that he also follows me on Instagram 😉 We are like BFFs now! I follow his fun and adorable wife, Neisha, on Instagram, too!
Another Favorite – Ivor Cummins and “Eat Rich, Live Long” authored with Jeffry Gerber, MD!
I was thrilled to discover the brain of Ivor Cummins mid-way through my weight loss journey. He’s an engineer, not an MD – but he is very adept at solving complex problems – like my metabolism, cholesterol, and cardiac function. I thoroughly enjoy his lectures and blogs. You can find everything here on his website: The Fat Emperor.
I have a very strong history of CVD (cardio-vascular disease) in my family. It’s something that I monitor closely and with the help of my outstanding local rock star cardiologist. It was so interesting to me that Ivor’s number one recommended test is the Calcium Heart score – which my doctor had ordered way before I began my Keto journey. I am happy to say that my Calcium Heart score was ZERO – which my cardiologist did a happy dance over given my father, grandfather, and brother’s heart disease history. Ivor is RIGHT ON the money by recommending that as the standard in predicting your risk for CVD. I highly recommend this inexpensive testing for peace of mind and for awareness of your risk. Knowledge is power!
I absolutely love Ivor and the work he is doing with Dr. Gerber. Check them out. Not to mention his awesome Irish accent ;). Buy their book on Amazon! This is another one that I bought several copies to share with my Keto Crew!
RuledMe.com
An awesome website that has pages explaining Keto, recipes, success stories – and more. I found my very favorite Keto recipe there. Crispy Skin Slow Roasted Pork Shoulder (or butt!). Make sure you follow the recipe and cook it “low and slow”. Oh my goodness – who knew I loved pork this much?!?!
I will keep updating this page as I find awesome new resources to help you in your Keto, LCHF, or Intermittent Fasting journey! If you have a favorite resource – feel free to send me the info via my Contact page. I am always educating myself!
(Disclaimer: I am not a health care professional. I am writing about my personal experiences to encourage others to research a low-carb lifestyle. You should always work closely with a health care professional to manage your health. I work with three MDs to manage my health: functional medicine, cardiology, and sleep/pulmonology. They treat my metabolic dysfunctions along with monitoring my important blood markers routinely. Keto or LCHF may not be an appropriate way of eating for your metabolic health or other health needs. Please check with your personal health care professional before making any changes in your diet.)
